Today I took a bit of time out and sat down with a tub of old pennies. Bliss! We’d put it aside back in 2013. The earliest one was 1952 and the latest was the last – 2012. All of them saved from 2011/2012 circulation. Unfortunately there were a few with severe bronze disease and it has now spread as it is wont. Tiny patches of bright green here and there. Sydney Hodgkinson we glimpse as a Hudson’s Bay Company man. In 1909 he’s working as an accountant at the H.B.C. Telegraph Creek trading post in the northern part of British Columbia. Sydney is an imaginative and lyrical chap – he writes to a friend in familiar verse, thanking him for a book: Sydney Hodgkinson worked with the mighty H.B.C. from 1908 to 1935. The trading posts were often in tiny, remote settlements. In the 1910 Henderson’s B.C. Gazetteer, where Hodgkinson is listed as an accountant, Telegraph Creek is noted as “a trading post, mining camp and post office in the Comox-Atlin district”…

Canada issued the world’s first Christmas stamp in 1898. It features a map with the British Empire in red and the words “We hold a vaster Empire than has been”. This a line from an ode written by welsh William Morriss for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee called “A Song of Empire” It was to be 66 years before Canada issued another Christmas stamp in 1964. In the 1992 Provinces of Canada series the British Columbia 25 cents shows a pod of Orcas with the coastal range beyond. 1867 to 1992 says the obverse legend.
