The Trudough political satire funny money coin.

Loon like a dollar coin

2018 Justin Trudeau political protest coin.  The coins name “Trudough” is a nod to Trudeau Sr. who had his own “Trudough” protest notes in the 60’s.  The coin is designed to loosely resemble a Canadian one dollar (Loony) coin but approximately double the size.  It highlights the Trudeau government’s pipeline deal with Kinder Morgan. The reverse features a loon coated in oil with the word “CANADA”, the date ‘2018’ and “TRUDOUGH”.  The obverse feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II shedding a large tear drop and the words ‘KINDER’ and ‘MORGAN’ on each side of the portrait. Stamps in a Can

Stamps in a Can

In November 2016, to celebrate the National Canning industry, Portugal issued a series of six stamps contained in an unopened can.  The idea behind this very special highlight was the inclusion of 50,000 series of these stamps presented inside food cans, specially prepared and screen-printed for the purpose, but otherwise identical to those used for seafood. These stamps show the different processes as well as the various types of fish, including Sardines, Eel, and Tuna, which you can find attractively packaged in colourful cans in food stores and souvenir shops everywhere in Lisbon! This is the first time that an…

$4.20 CottonMouth Currency, Trudeau protest note

front of zigzag papers design

$4.20 CottonMouth Currency  Merchant Scrip / Political Funny Money. The note falls into a number of collecting categories; Advertising, Merchant Scrip and Political Funny Money. The note was given out at Vancouver’s 4/20 (4/20/2018) Sunset Beach marijuana celebration and protest. The note appears to have a dual purpose, the first is to promote the Cotton Mouth Smoke Shop at 1120 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC. by encouraging customers to redeem the note for $4.20 toward their next purchase at the Davie Street shop. The second is to slow legalization of marijuana by the Trudeau government. The note is printed on 70mm…

Wooden Nickel update

Vancouver Numismatic Society at Hotel Vancouver 1971

I asked about Wooden Nickels at the last club meeting. There were 4 of us collecting them! Gene knew of several sources of information. He also remembered spending one at a coffee shop! The idea of wooden money came from America apparently – back in the 1930s when banks in Washington State issued them in an emergency. Dec 4th Canada Coin News have just published a fascinating article on Wooden money by Jesse Robitaille Collecting wooden money remains strong in Canada There’s a collector’s society too! “Founded in 1975 with 45 charter members and expanding beyond 200 members by the end of…

Bad Girls of Vancouver wooden token

Most are adverts for local businesses in Vancouver and British Columbia.  A few have ‘made in USA’. Was there a local B.C. firm producing them as well ?  We may find out more on Tuesday 20th 6.30pm at the North Shore Numismatic Society club meeting at our usual Bonsor 55+ .I’ll bring a selection of these fascinating pieces of British Columbiana. The Story of the French Spy Stamps

French 50 Centimes Stamp

(The original French stamps are on the left, the British counterparts are on the right) Most philatelist know the part that stamps have played in making — and remaking — the history of the world.   They have started wars and celebrated peace; they have inflamed slumbering animosities into bloody outbreaks, ridiculed political leaders, and they have played a most important part in the waging of war. In recent times, stamps perhaps played no more important role than they did in helping the French underground, the famed Maquis, in their life and death struggle with…

Remembering Norman Williams (1924-2018)

Norman Williams

Norm was born in 1924 at Fernie, B.C. to a Ukrainian-Canadian family.  His baptismal name was Vladimir Waslykow, which he later changed to “Norman Williams” before practising law.  His father ran a restaurant in Kamloops, B.C. – a fact that he would mention to servers whenever we were at a restaurant.  Norm attended the University of British Columbia’s law school and set up his law practice in New Westminster.  In the 1980s when I telephoned him at his office, he was often at the Elks Club for lunch which extended into afternoon card games.  His first wife was a Hungarian…
