Oom Paul 5 Cent Token Issue

Oom Paul Token

The maverick online token identifier used to have a listing of one other token and  seemed to think it might be a token related to an American named Oom Paul. Now it lists it as being attributed to Wayne, Nebraska and says “also attributed to Saint John’s, Quebec, Canada” and “this token is from St. John’s, Quebec (now known as “Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu)”. The one web reference I did come across to Oom Paul and cigars and 5 cents is to an Oom Paul in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Oom Paul, I have no doubt, refers to Oom Paul Kruger of the Transvaal…

In the late 1850s, gold was discovered in the Fraser River and Cariboo districts of British Columbia. The gold rush that followed brought a large influx of new inhabitants, changing the colony virtually overnight from a small settlement based on trading to a rapidly expanding one. The Shortage of Coins The colonists living in New France from the mid-1660s on used barter to exchange goods but also used metal coins, such as this 15-sol French coin dated 1670. However, there was never enough hard currency to go around. I rather believe that the purpose of this PNE token, which was issued for the 1964 fair (in Vancouver B.C.), was to let exhibitors and club display members in, so that they did not have to pay admission.
